Kariobangi Sharks U-17s side will be participating in Zone C of the Nairobi Sub County League 2018 edition. Sixteen teams from Nairobi will be competing in Zone C of the Sub County League and the ever ambitious Sharks will be looking to win it on their second attempt after their 5th place finish last season. Geoffrey Wangalwa Magolo is the U-17s head coach while Beldine Leila is the Assistant coach. Joseph Obu is the team physio and Caleb Owino completes the team officials list as the goal keeper trainer. The four have been tasked with bringing the best out of the young Sharks in accordance to the traditions of Kariobangi Sharks Football Club. Geoffrey Wangalwa said his team is raring to go in this competition in an exclusive interview with the Kariobangi Sharks Digital team. You can read an extract of the interview below.

The team is ready: My team is very youthful, in fact most of my players are under the age of 16. Our captain is Naftali Otieno and he is also 16 and a very bright talent. We are missing some key players who have been called up to the National team as well as those playing in the Norway Cup but I still have a strong team at my disposal.

Preparations: We have prepared well and we can’t wait for the league to kick off. My players were a bit disappointed when the league was postponed but they are now excited to be playing their first match of the season on Sunday (15th April 2018).

The Targets: We want to improve on our 5th place finish last season. We are hoping to finish in the top 3 and we believe that with enough hard work and determination, we can achieve something special this season.

Players to look out for: We have a lot of exciting players such as Movin Otieno, Isaac Wasambo , Byron Ochieng and Sode Woge. I would also like to mention Lenny Ochieng who at the age of thirteen has impressed the coaching staff.

Proud Group: At the start of this season, 4 of our players were promoted to the U-20s side while 3 were called up to the national team. We are looking to continue in this trend because Kariobangi Sharks is fully committed to developing young players in our community and helping them to become pros. My team is humbled to be tasked with the role of developing the future Sharks.

William Muluya gave his thoughts on the 2-2 draw with Sony Sugar Fc in interviews with the Kariobangi Sharks Digital Team.

1. Sharks were favourites heading into the match, are you frustrated we didn’t manage to win?

We went into the match as the favourite but we can’t fail to acknowledge the fact that Sony did present themselves better in that match and it has never been easy playing a side that has just had changes to their Technical team. The players tend to prove a lot to the new technical team just to win their confidence. All in all, had we utilized the chances we got together with a lost penalty then we could have carried the day.

2. What is your assessment of the team’s performance in the draw?

We lacked some sharpness in front of the goal, a worrying trend because we couldn’t score from the penalty spot and this has now happened in two consecutive matches.

3. The team created a lot of chances but some of them were missed, Shiveka missed a penalty while Kapaito should probably have been awarded a penalty in the second half. Was this one of those games where things go against the team?

I will say the match was at the palm of our hands and we were the team to dictate whatever results we wanted from the match, I wouldn’t really talk about the denied penalty but rather the missed chances and that’s what the boys need to work on because for us to win we need to score enough goals and actually more goals.

4. Did the team miss the injured Pascal Ogweno, Duke Abuya, Francis Manoah and Sven Yidah and how soon will they return?

The mentioned players are all first team members and their services were missed yes, but it gave an opportunity to the likes of Vincent Wasambo and Sydney Lokale to have a chance to showcase their abilities, I was impressed so much by the players who stood in for them particularly Wasambo who to me,  was very impressive in his first premier league match.

5. The gap to the league leaders is now ten points, is the team going to challenge for the title this season?

For us to challenge for the league, we need to stop dropping the points especially from the matches we seem to be winning only to let go in the last minutes ,anything is possible and I can’t rule out the possibilities of gunning for the top position.

The low down: The Sharks make the long trip to Migori County for the first leg fixture against Sony Sugar FC in the 2018 season at Awendo Green Stadium. Kariobangi Sharks will be looking to better their scoreless draw at Awendo Green Stadium last season in August and further climb the table, but it will be a tough task playing against a team so desperate to put their recent bad run of form behind them.
How can I follow? The match kicks off at 14:00 EAT. Our Facebook subscribers can follow live updates as the match unfolds. Video highlights of the game will be available on Monday both on our YouTube and Facebook platforms.
What’s the team news? Pascal Ogweno will miss the game through suspension while Duke Abuya and Francis Manoah are both out injured. Duke Abuya misses out after sustaining an injury in training and Francis Manoah left the pitch injured in our last league match against Ulinzi Stars. Apart from the three, the rest of the squad is available for selection by the coach.
Our Form: The Sharks play the first match of April on the back of a loss to Ulinzi Stars, a draw with Sofapaka and two wins over Thika United and Wazito in March.
How about Sony? Sony are winless in four matches and recently parted ways with their head coach Salim Babu after losses to AFC Leopards, Bandari, Mathare United and Nzoia Sugar. Former Sony captain Sylvester Wanyama has been handed the task of trying to stop the Sharks.
What’s our record like against Sony? In the first ever KPL meeting between the two sides in May 2017, Kariobangi Sharks beat Sony 2 – 0 at home and later drew 0 - 0  at Awendo Green Stadium in August that year. The Sharks also knocked Sony Sugar FC out of the GOtv Shield in 2017 with a 2 – 0 win at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.
What they said: Skipper Eric Juma spoke confidently about the fixture; “We are going for a win because we want to shake off the home loss to Ulinzi Stars last time out. We will be aiming to reduce the gap between us and the league leaders to five points from the current eight.”
Did you know? Sony have never won a competitive match against Sharks. Pascal Ogweno and Ovella Ochieng were the scorers in our home win against The Millers in the league last season while Masud Juma’s brace helped see of Sony in the GOtv Shield last season.
