2019 SportPesa Supercup winners
Kariobangi Sharks have set a date with Everton FC for later on this year; this after the side claimed the 2019 SportPesa Cup after defeating Bandari FC 1-0 in an all-Kenyan final played Sunday 27 January at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam.
Harry Mwendwa scored the only goal of the game with an hour gone to claim the victory for Sharks who aside from setting a date with Everton, also walk away with Kshs. 3 million in prize money.
MoTM
Mwendwa was named the Man of the Match and received a check of Kshs. 50,000 while Duke Abuya walked away with the top scorers gong after his two goals in the opening day win over Yanga FC.
Bandari did not go away empty handed as they walked away with Kshs 1 million in prize money with forward William Wadri being named tournament MVP.
Both teams know each other well from the domestic duels over the past three seasons that Sharks have been in the league since their promotion in 2017.
And as a result both approached the game with caution, creating minimal chances in the opening stanza.
Aggressive
But Bandari looked the more aggressive of the two with Bernard Odhiambo and David King’atua both coming close in the opening exchanges to breaking the deadlock.
But the best chance of the half would go to Sharks with the almost the final kick of the stanza. After turning well to lose his marker, George Abege would agonizingly drag his shot wide just inches of the upright.
An off the ball incident in the second half between Michael Bodo and Abdallah Hassan that would go unnoticed by the referee provided a distraction for Sharks who reacted quickly after the restart, taking advantage of Bandari’s lack of concentration to score the decider.
Goal
A devastating through ball from Duke Abuya with an hour gone in the game was latched on to by Mwendwa who beat all in sight for pace to score past an out stretched Farouk Shikhalo and set his team on the way to claiming their first ever trophy outside of the country.
